The Powell River Public Library is happy to provide writing groups for a variety of ages and experience levels.
Young Writers’ Group
Writers ages 11-18 are invited to join the Young Writers’ Group, which has been meeting since May 2017. Led by Teen Services Coordinator Megan Cole, this goal of this group is to work with writers on long term projects including short stories, essays, poems and novels. Writers are encouraged to share their work with the group and receive feedback. Exercises are included to help writers develop particular aspects of their writing. The Young Writers’ Group meets Fridays from 4-5 pm in the Teen Room at the Powell River Public Library.
Memoir Writing for Seniors
More than 100 people have participated in a seven-week Memoir Writing for Seniors course and many of them continue to meet monthly through the Library’s Monthly Memoir Writing programs. These initiatives have also resulted in more than a dozen events in which seniors have read short memoirs to the community, and the Library has even published annual books of seniors’ memoirs. Seniors have great stories and wonderful life experience. With the Library’s help these local writers can share stories with their children, grandchildren, friends and fans, who learn things about them that they never would have known otherwise. Plus, more and more research is confirming the many benefits derived from memoir writing including increased social and emotional well-being!
