WIR 2022 – Poetry Circle with Gabrielle Prendergast

PRPL’s Writer in Residence joins Amira Abouelalla in this shared creative space for poetry to talk about writing in verse.

Poetry Circle is a place for listening, connecting, and being inspired. Drop in every two weeks, 4:30 – 6:00 pm.

About Amira Abouelalla

Amira is from Toronto, Ontario where she was born and raised until the age of 12. That same year, she moved to Egypt with her family where she lived and went to school for 5 years. Living in Egypt, Amira was able to learn and speak her father-tongue– Arabic– and reconnect with her Egyptian culture. Amira is also Ojibway from Keeseekoowenin First Nations in Manitoba and has Black ancestry from Nova scotia.

Amira studied at York University where she received her bachelor’s degree with honours in English and a bachelor of education. Amira’s goal has always been to work in education to change, understand, and prevent further injustices against Indigenous Peoples in Canada.

Poetry is something that has always resonated with Amira. She expresses, “It’s how I see and move through the world.”

In addition to reading and writing poetry, Amira also enjoys travelling, kayaking, and cycling.

Amira Abouelalla also is part of the jehjeh Media team and was the emcee at PRPL’s 2022 Poetry Slam- The Language of Trees.

PRPL’s 2022 Writer in Residence – Gabrielle Prendergast

Gabrielle Prendergast is the award-winning author of numerous books for children and teens. Gabrielle has been nominated for the White Pine Award and the CLA Award, The Vancouver Book Award, The Myrca, Diamond Willow and Red Cedar prizes. Gabrielle has an MFA in Creative Writing from UBC and has taught writing at Sydney University, San Francisco State University, UBC and Royal Canadian College as well as at numerous conferences and in school classrooms.

Gabrielle was Writer in Residence at Vancouver Public Library in 2014 and has expertise in mentoring and supporting authors writing for adults, including those who are interested in self-publishing.
