2021 BC Writers Series presents Melanie Siebert
Featuring real-life stories of people who have found hope and meaning in the midst of life’s struggles, Heads Up: Changing Minds on Mental Health is the go-to guide for teenagers who want to know about mental health, mental illness, trauma and recovery.
Brought to you by the Powell River Friends of the Library, the Powell River Public Library presents author Melanie Siebert speaking about Heads Up: Changing Minds on Mental Health. Heads Up covers a lot of territory – from the troubled history of asylums to modern-day psychiatry. The book highlights the often overlooked impact of trauma and oppression. And it features diverse paths to healing, including Indigenous cultural approaches, trauma-informed yoga and hip hop, peer support and many others. But the heart of this book is the true stories of young people finding their way to understanding and hope.
Melanie Siebert is a therapist in Victoria, BC who works with youth and families. Heads Up: Changing Minds on Mental Health is a non-fiction guide to all things mental health, trauma and recovery for youth and the people who care about them. Melanie has a Master of Social Work and a Master of Fine Arts. Heads Up was finalist for the 2021 BC and Yukon Book Prizes, Sheila Egoff Children’s Literature prize.
